DIY Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and Aloe Vera Healing Natural Skin Cream
Store-bought skincare is extraordinarily expensive – and it’s full of all kinds of chemical weirdness that you really don’t want getting into your body. So I thought it was about time I shared my natural skincare recipe. It’s ridiculously easy to make, only contains natural ingredients, and doesn’t cost much.
We use this cream or natural body butter for a variety of issues, including:
As a natural cream for psoriasis, it’s really quite amazing – after just a day or two, plaques start flaking away and it significantly reduces the sore redness and irritation associated with plaque psoriasis.
Thanks to its healing, soothing, and moisturizing properties, this DIY skin cream calms the swelling and discomfort of insect bites and stings and promotes faster healing of minor wounds and reduces skin irritation and allergic rashes.
Here’s how to make it
Ingredients:
The Recipe:
Start by harvesting your aloe leaf. Break it off at the soil level. Wash it thoroughly. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the green outer layer. Once finished, you should have the slippery gel-like interior of the leaf. At this point, it’s really important to wash the gel by gently running it under cold water. Yes, you may wash away a little of the gel, and many people skip this step, but it’s essential. Just under the spiky green exterior, mature aloe leaves have a barely visible secondary layer. If you hold the cut leaf on its end, you’ll likely be able to see a fine yellowish substance. This very thin layer is a mild irritant – so the last thing you want to do is put it in your natural skin cream. After the final wash, stick the gel into a blender and whizz it up until it’s a liquid.
Add the coconut oil and shea butter, and blitz in the blender again. If you find the mixture sticks too much in the blender, once the aloe vera is juiced, you can place it, along with the other ingredients, in a mixing bowl and work it all together with a wooden spoon.
Once you have a nice, even mixture, simply pop it in a small glass jar with an airtight lid, then store it in the fridge for 3 months.
TIP
This natural skin cream makes a fabulous gift. Simply place it in a miniature Kilner jar or similar with a pretty piece of ribbon and a tag around the top. It’s pretty, thoughtful, green, useful, and inexpensive.
TIP
A little goes a long way! Because the recipe uses both an oil and a butter, when it’s kept in the fridge it goes solid, but if you take a little from the jar, it softens quickly. Because of the oil content, a little really does go a long way, and it’ll seem a little greasy when you first apply it – but don’t be alarmed – it’ll quickly absorb into your skin, so give it a minute or two.
